Richard Wagner: Die Walküre, Act I

A storm is raging. Siegmund, fleeing from his enemies, seeks shelter in Hunding’s house, where Sieglinde offers him refuge. A duel ensues, love blossoms, secrets are revealed, and an enchanted sword finds its rightful owner.

In this concert performance of the first act of Die Walküre, the second opera of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, the magnificent soloists are Silja Aalto, Bryan Register and Mika Kares. Conducted by Anja Bihlmaier, the concert opens with Lily Boulanger’s dark and melancholic D’un soir triste, followed by the serenity of Sibelius’s Seventh Symphony.

Originally titled Fantasia sinfonica, the Seventh Symphony is a vibrant masterpiece and a brilliant culmination of Sibelius’s symphonic output.
