Residentie Orkest

Debussy, Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakoff

Programme

Soloist

Yeol Eum Son

Sultan’s palace. Sheherazade tells fairy tales from One Thousand and One Nights. Tales that the Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov narrated atmospherically in his enchanting Sheherzade. A passionate and majestic masterpiece in which each section of the Residentie Orkest has a leading role. Also magical is Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, played by the fabulous Yeol Eum Son. Last season’s artist in residence continues her musical journey tonight at the Residentie Orkest.

Promising pianist Paul Wittgenstein lost his right arm in World War I. Hence, Ravel wrote his Piano Concerto for the left hand. Last season, top pianist Yeol Eum Son played Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G with the Residentie Orkest conducted by Anja Bihlmaier. Just as enthusiastically and passionately, they will now perform the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand . Both works will appear together on CD. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade fits nicely into these atmospheric days before Christmas. A little time to dream away romantically in a symphonic fairytale world.
